6 raring2go.co.uk Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is one of the most significant festivals in Indian culture - celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains, usually falling between mid-October and mid-November. The word Diwali means “row of lights”, and homes, shops and public spaces are decorated with small oil lamps called diyas. It signifies new beginnings: the victory of good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. One of the best-loved legends behind the festival is the story of Rama and Sita - a prince and princess exiled from their kingdom, whose safe return home after a great battle was welcomed with rows of lit lamps. It’s said to be where the tradition of lighting diyas comes from. In 2026, Diwali Day falls on Sunday 8th November. Leicester is home to one of the biggest Diwali celebrations outside India. The first public Diwali lights in the city were switched on back in 1983, and it took decades of determination to grow that into the spectacular celebrations we see today. Now, people travel from far and wide to see thousands of lights along the city’s “Golden Mile”, and homes, temples and gurdwaras lit up across Leicester. Diwali Day Sun 8th Nov, Cossington Recreation Ground & Belgrave Road Family-friendly celebrations return to Cossington Recreation Ground, with dance, music and cultural performances, food vendors, arts and crafts stalls and a children’s funfair. 21 Raring2go! CHRISTMAS The Christmas creep starts earlier every year. I was in my local B&M this August, before the new school year had started, and there was already an aisle of chocolate coins and selection boxes. Why?! This feeling usually carries me to December, then I panic to find the right gifts. I love giving gifts, but not for the sake of it. With my 5-year-old boy, I want it to outlast the usual two days of rough handling! Here are a few ideas I’m considering this year… Beyond the Wrapping Paper: A Different Kind of Christmas Gift Guide Investing in gold I love the idea of giving my child something that actually grows in value, rather than being forgotten by January. A small amount of gold or silver, even a 1g bar or a Sovereign coin, can mean far more in eighteen years than most toys will in eighteen days. The price of gold has risen by around 128% over the last five years (The Royal Mint, August 2026). Buying with purpose Is there anything wrong with buying gifts that are actually needed? I have fond memories as a child of unwrapping new underwear every year in my stocking, and I like to keep that tradition going! Make something together Some of the best gifts cost nothing but time. A memory jar, a homemade voucher book (“one free video-game session with Grandpa”), a batch of baking or a decoration made together on a wet Saturday afternoon. Give to others Choosing a charity gift together - sponsoring an animal, donating to a food bank in a child’s name, filling a shoebox appeal, or picking a gift for a local family in need. Shop local If you are buying something wrapped, a voucher for a local, independent business is a lovely way to spend Christmas money. It keeps the spend in your own community, and usually requires more thought than a last-minute supermarket grab. Choose a different kind of experience A cookery class, a forest school session, a pottery workshop, a mini pamper session or a block of swimming lessons?
Let’s be honest: “maths” and “fun” aren’t words most children put in the same sentence. But with a few tweaks, you can turn times tables dread into genuine enthusiasm, no wizardry required. Here are 10 ways to make numbers click. Make Maths Fun (No, Seriously!) 2. Sneak Maths into Everyday Life Cooking means measuring. Shopping means budgeting and counting change. Even planning a day out means working out distance and time. Maths is already hiding in your day, you’re just pointing it out! 6. For families with significant wealth, safeguarding assets across generations is a priority. One of the most effective ways in which to achieve this is by means of a Pre- (or Post-) Nuptial Agreement. A Pre-Nuptial Agreement is a contract entered into by a couple before their marriage or civil partnership has taken place. The Agreement will set out how their financial affairs will be managed in the event of a breakdown of their relationship and can include provision to protect inherited wealth, family businesses or other assets intended for future generations. Each Agreement is tailored specifically to meet the needs and circumstances of the particular couple and certainly should not be regarded as a “one size fits all” solution. One of the key benefits of a Pre-Nuptial Agreement is the ability to ring-fence certain assets such as family trusts or inherited property for one party rather than such assets potentially being divided between the parties in a divorce settlement. This is particularly important for families concerned about the impact of a future divorce on shared wealth. Provided the overall settlement is fair the Courts are more likely to uphold Agreements that respect individual autonomy. It is important to remember however that an Agreement will not be upheld if it prejudices the reasonable needs of any children of the family. For families with complex financial arrangements, such as family investment companies or trusts, a Pre-Nuptial Agreement can complement other asset protection strategies. For example, governance documents for family companies can include provisions requiring family members to enter into Pre-Nuptial Agreements as a condition of shareholding and this layered approach provides additional security against the financial risks associated with divorce. To ensure the enforceability of a Pre-Nuptial Agreement it is crucial that both parties receive independent legal advice and fully understand the implications of the Agreement. Transparency is key and both parties must provide full disclosure of their means and resources. Additionally, the Agreement should be signed well in advance of the ceremony to avoid any suggestion of coercion or undue influence. Generally this should be no less than 28 days before the wedding or civil partnership takes place. Whilst Nuptial Agreements are not yet formally binding in England and Wales as it is not possible to completely remove the Court’s discretion in financial matters, they are increasingly being recognised by the Courts as being persuasive. Provided they are properly drafted and adhere to certain requirements, they can be decisive in financial remedy proceedings on divorce. This makes them a vital consideration and a powerful tool for individuals and families seeking to protect their financial legacy.
