23 Raring2go! GARDENING SUMMER GARDENING After all the rain and now wonderful sunshine, gardens are definitely coming to life and blooming with wonderful arrays of greens and colourful flowers. Here are some top gardening tips from Hall’s Garden Centre to help you make the most of your garden this summer. Flowers: Deadhead summer bedding plants regularly so that all of the plants’ energy goes into making new flowers. Vegetables: Cabbages, cauliflowers and brussels sprouts can all be planted outside. Turnips and swede can be sown, ready for harvesting between November and February. Fruits: Strawberries will be turning red and ready to pick. Add straw underneath to protect the fruit from touching the soil and remove any yellow leaves. Apple and pear trees can both be pruned to aid growth and retain shape. Don’t forget to feed your tomatoes to ensure they keep growing into wonderfully juicy fruits! Hall’s Garden Centre has hundreds of gardening items, plants, seeds and tools and are now back open 7 days a week. Visit them at Hall’s Garden Centre, 211 Chester Road, B73 5BF. Big News, Little Ears: Helping Children Make Sense of the News As parents, it is natural to want to protect our children from distressing events in the news. Seeing them upset can feel overwhelming, and it is understandable to avoid difficult conversations out of concern that talking might led to more anxieties. However, open and supportive discussions can help children feel safe and reassured, reminding them that they do not have to carry their worries alone and that it is okay to ask questions or feel upset. Even when children do not fully understand events, they are often aware that something troubling is happening. Without guidance, they may imagine scenarios that are more frightening or confusing. Discuss your child’s concerns openly rather than saying ‘there’s nothing to worry about’. Feeling worried at times is normal, keep talking and offer reassurance. We might be tempted to ‘fix’ our children’s worries, but support comes from validating emotions and exploring together how we can understand our worries. Use age-appropriate language. Young children benefit from short, clear explanations, while older children and teenagers may want more detail and discussion. Be mindful of exposure to news and social media, particularly repeated or graphic coverage. Talk about helpers, such as emergency workers, doctors, teachers, community members, as this can offer reassurance that even in difficult situations, adults are working to keep others safe. These discussions do not need to answer every question; they simply help children feel heard, supported, and not alone. You’re a Bad Man, Mr Gum is a really funny book. My favourite part was when Jake the big dog was saved by some magical dolphin chocolate. My favourite character was Polly because she really cares about Jake the big dog. I’ve read other books in this series and this is the best one! I really liked the extra bonus material for the 20th anniversary edition, especially seeing the original illustrations for the book and the original ending because they made me laugh. I would recommend this book for children who like funny stories. Review by ABI, aged 9 Five stars. WHAT you can do at the FARM ? We are well known for all activities being included for paying child visitors … they get a bucket of animal feed and can also take part in activities run by our staff through the day; a bumpy tractor trailer ride, stroke a bunny, chick chat, collect an egg to take home, pony sit-on and groom are all included. We have 3 outdoor play areas as well, and plenty of animals to meet, stroke and feed. The activities run on rotation every hour, so whatever time you arrive, you won’t miss out. Included in the farm visit is our Creepy Critters Barn and the Falconry. THE BIG PLAY BARN (huge soft play) Lots of fun !www.chidrensfarm.co.uk Raring2go! COMPETITIONS COMPETITIONS
