If someone asked you what The Fountain Centre is, would you know? Some of us find out the hard way, but most local residents have no idea that they have this wonderful facility on hand when they need it most. The Fountain Centre is an independent charity (Reg No 1089086) for cancer patients, their families and carers located in the St Luke’s Cancer Centre in the Royal Surrey Hospital in Guildford. When a patient is diagnosed with cancer they often find themselves in a state of shock with their lives spiraling out of control, not knowing where to turn. The Fountain Centre is there for patients and their families from the initial cancer diagnosis until treatment finishes and beyond. This local independent charity provides information, psychological support and complementary therapies, in a calming and relaxed atmosphere, allowing patients to make informed choices and regain control of their future. They also have a wig bank, a lending library, and can provide information about local support groups, welfare benefits and a host of specialist cancer charities. When an adult has cancer it affects everyone. Supporting Local Families It can bring dramatic changes to family life, whilst everyone adjusts to the new ‘normal’. Sometimes children get overlooked or maybe the adults around them just don’t know what to say? It can be a bewildering and lonely experience for children. How do you begin to tell them what is going on and how can you help them cope? The Fountain Centre’s Family Support Service, offers one to one counselling for children and young people under the age of 18, as well as guidance and support for parents whose children might not want to access counselling, as well as support for teachers and other healthcare professionals. Every year the Fountain Centre helps over 2,500 newly diagnosed cancer patients and their loved ones to live with cancer. There is more information about the services they can offer and how you can help their work on their website, www.fountaincentre.org. 18 Raring2go! THE FOUNTAIN CENTRE

Starting school is an exciting milestone for children and parents. It can also be a daunting time. With preparation and encouragement, you can set your child up for a great start. You may hear people refer to the term ‘school readiness’ but what does this mean? Children of all ages are ready to learn. The skills and opportunities that children experience whether at nursery, with a childminder or in a nursery setting all have an impact on their future schooling. They are already developing their social and self-help skills, are used to following instructions, communicating with adults, helping with tidying up and looking after their belongings. There is no expectation that they need to be able to read or write. You may be thinking how can I prepare my child? The calmer and more prepared you feel as a parent, the more likely your child will feel ready and happy to skip into school on the first day. Talk to your child about starting school. What do they think it will be like? What are they most looking forward to? Is there anything they are unsure about? Be careful not to overdo it. Top tips for a great start: • Visit ahead of the first day so your child feels familiar with their new environment • Organise playdates and meet other parents during the summer holidays • Practise the morning routine and school run • Establish a routine ahead of the first day to give your child a sense of security and stability Off to a great start preparing your child for school • Ensure your child has a bedtime routine. Children who regularly get a good amount of sleep have improved attention, behaviour, learning, memory and overall mental and physical health • Encourage your child to do things for themselves • Have your child’s timetable on the fridge to help them know what is happening each day • Establish a relationship with your child’s teacher and if you have any concerns, raise them early Most importantly enjoy your child’s first day. Enjoy the photo on the front doorstep marking the occasion. It is natural for you to feel nervous on your child’s first day. Have a plan for what you are going to do; head to work, go for a run, have coffee with a friend. It is also important to remember it is not all about the first day. Some children are surprised when they have to go back every day! Raring2go! EDUCATION 26 Emily Jefford Head of Pre-Prep St Catherine’s Prep School Bramley, Surrey - www.stcatherines.info

Strong study skills are essential for children to achieve their full potential. Anna Dalglish of Kumon Guildford North explains how students can develop these skills. Organisational Skills can be developed from a young age. Students as young as 4 or 5 enjoy feeling independent and “owning” their work. Have high but realistic expectations, explain clearly what you wish them to do (eg record start and finish times), and model what you wish them to do (eg put their work into their folder). Encouraging a 3 year old to turn pages on their own is the beginning of developing independence and organisational skills. Concentration and focus - Set time targets and encourage students to record their own start and finish times. Gently encourage them to “keep going” if distracted. Start with an easily achievable level - eg 5 minutes per day - and build up gradually. Ensure the work is “just right” for their current ability level. Correcting and Learning from Mistakes increases understanding and instils confidence. Emphasize the positive (“80 correct answers” not “20 errors”), encourage students to see corrections as a learning opportunity, praise effort more than results, and make completing corrections an intrinsic part of daily study. Self-Discipline - By adopting a daily study habit students will make progress every day even when not feeling motivated. Encourage the daily habit, ensure work is just right for their current ability, and set a daily workload which is achievable. Developing Strong Study Skills Perseverance when questions seem difficult develops confidence, a “can-do” attitude and problem-solving skills. To develop perseverance, set work at the “just-right” level, ensure each concept is mastered before moving on, give positive praise, remind students of previously learned concepts which could help with the new problem, and instil confidence that they have the information and skills to answer the current questions. Other desirable study skills include: answering all questions; giving everything a try; time management; fluency, pace and rhythm; reading and following instructions; legible handwriting; good posture. Challengers is an independent charity that gives disabled children and young people the opportunity to play in a safe and supportive environment. Each year, they support around 1,000 children aged 2-18 at their inclusive Pre-schools, Play and Youth schemes across the South East of England. The power of play Play is vital for every child’s happiness and development, but sadly too many disabled young people miss out Bringing the joy of play to everyone on it every day. Challengers provide truly inclusive play opportunities that everyone can join in with and enjoy. Supporting families For many families, Challengers is a lifeline that they simply wouldn’t be able to cope without. While the smiles speak for themselves, parents often say how much their children love going to Challengers and how it benefits their family. Mum of 9-year-old Eleanor, said: “So many disabled children, like mine, will never get invited to parties or play dates. Challengers might be all they have, so it’s impossible to stress enough what a vital part of their lives it is” How can I help? • The quickest and easiest way to help is by making a one-off or regular donation to Challengers. Anything you can give will make a huge difference to the people they support. • Looking for some fun plans this summer? Challengers have a range of family-friendly events and fundraisers coming up which you can get involved with, including the Wood Street Jazz Festival in July and the Twilight Runway Challenge in September! • If you’re not able to give, how about offering your time? Challengers always in need of more local volunteers to help at our fundraising events, in the office, or at our Play and Youth schemes.
