3 HELLO! Raring2go! raring2go.co.uk At last the sun is out! It feels like it’s been a long time coming but now we’ve got the summer holidays just around the corner, 6 weeks of trying to keep the kids entertained! We have packed this issue with loads of ideas of things to do and places to go this summer and have even included a planner so you can plan it all out ahead of time. We’ve also included some ideas of places to go during the holidays which don’t cost you a penny (unless like me you can’t say no to an ice lolly wherever you go!) If like me you are going to be trying to juggle work as well while the kids are off then like me you will be very grateful for our local holiday clubs! We’ve rounded up all our local favourites including Camp Beaumont, Stagecoach Theatre Schools, and Little Gym. There are even a few savings to be had so make sure you check it out! Godstone Farm’s motto, “Discover, Explore, Play,” embodies its deep-rooted dedication to the benefits of stimulating and exciting play for children. That’s precisely why the farm has invested millions in a new Play Barn, making it Surrey’s largest soft play destination. The Play Barn at Godstone Farm isn’t just physically vast; it’s also determined to make play as thrilling as possible. In the post-pandemic era, we’ve all come to appreciate the fleeting nature of childhood, and parents strive to provide happy, playful, and fun environments for their children to explore and discover. As early as 2011, Chief Medical Officers emphasized that engaging in fun and stimulating activities is beneficial for children’s physical health and mental wellbeing. Active children enhance their motor skills, develop coordination, balance, and body awareness. The results are evident: exercise leads to stronger muscles, improved bone density, and better control of breathing. High-quality play encompasses an additional aspect— risky play. Thrilling and exciting activities that carry physical risks, like climbing trees, jumping off swings, and building forts, fall under this category. While some argue against risky play, deeming it dangerous, growing evidence suggests its positive impact on children’s development. Nicola Henderson, CEO of Godstone Farm, states, “As a society, we often go to great lengths to protect our children from harm. We bubble wrap their lives, sanitize every surface, and constantly hover over them. But what if we’re hindering their development? What if we’re denying them the chance to become resilient, Godstone Farm’s new Play Barn champions the joy of play! confident, and capable adults? This might sound ambitious for a soft play centre, but it’s something we consider daily and feel deeply passionate about.” Henderson continues, “Research indicates that engaging in risky play helps children acquire essential skills such as problem-solving, decision-making, and risk assessment. By taking risks and experiencing the consequences, children learn to assess and make informed decisions. They also develop resilience by picking themselves up after falls and trying again. The new Play Barn at Godstone Farm features climbing walls, rope bridges, and tunnels - offering these opportunities for children in a controlled environment, ensuring they have fun rain or shine.” By offering an environment that promotes this type of play, Godstone Farm intends to create lifelong memories and nurtures a spirit of adventure in its young visitors. This exciting new playbarn is open from late June onwards and to book tickets please go to www.godstonefarm.co.uk Raring2go! FUN ON THE FARM! 8

EDUCATION Raring2go! raring2go.co.uk Close your eyes and imagine …six weeks off work! Long days, hopefully with sun, to pass as you wish - quality time with the family, special days out or just chilling. Then the nasty bit and down to earth with a bump! Back to work and what do you find? The managers have changed. You now report to someone new. Your office has moved, not to mention your desk. Exactly how can you be expected to be on top form from day one? Hit the ground running, they said. How unreasonable is that? Stop! Think! What do we ask of our children every September if not their equivalent of this nightmare scenario? For them it is even worse as the weeks before the holiday were taken up with sports days and school trips, so they Beware challenges ahead! need an even longer recovery time – but won’t get it. The first time we do anything requires courage and determination which is why I so admire young children and so enjoy watching their early journey through school. Ahead of starting school encourage your child to engage in creative play. Allow them to solve some of their own problems – when they put their shoes on the wrong feet, pause and see if they can they figure that out for themselves. Provide simple choices but limit them to 2 or 3 options – I often refer to this as the ‘carrot or peas’ approach. Rather than, ‘What would you like to eat?’ which is a crazy question to ask a pre-school child, offer two alternatives. Give your child opportunities for play games which involve taking turns and sharing as well as dressing up and role play. Encourage the use of full sentences when talking to your child. Avoid comments like,’ Mummy wants you to come over and help,’ and start to use, ‘Please can you come and help me,’ and ‘thank you.’ Milestone Moments The first day of school is a major event but don’t overplay this. You will have spent considerable time and effort choosing the right school, trust your instincts and remain calm and positive. As the first term establish a good rapport with your child’s teacher and encourage their early reading and writing at home as advised by the school. Ask what happens in the book that they are reading and help with extending their vocabulary to include words such as ‘first, second, finally.’ Don’t be scared to use the correct vocabulary – if your child can recite Hickory Dickory Dock they can learn the correct vocabulary and should be moving away from pet names for things. By the end of the first year your child will be attached to their teacher and the school will prepare them for moving on to a new class with new pupils arriving too which can change the dynamic amongst the class. Each of these tittle steps are in fact giant leaps. Here at St Catherine’s we aim to capture the magic as it happens and share it with you when we can. We ask the children to give everything a try and to step out of their comfort zone with as much confidence as possible. Learning at this age must be fun and curiosity must be fostered. Enjoy the milestone moments – they are to be cherished. Naomi Bartholomew Headmistress St Catherine’s Prep School Bramley, Surrey www.stcatherines.info Raring2go! EDUCATION 34
