Raring2go! Raring2go! 16 raring2go.co.uk 17 It is hard to believe that there will be a shortage of water in the future when we are surrounded by the ocean and rivers. But water is not an endless resource and we need to use less of it. These could be by shortening our showers and using less bath water. Make sure you turn the tap off when brushing your teeth and that the tap is turned off properly after washing your hands. BUT HOW CAN WE INVEST IN OUR PLANET? The biggest investment we can make as individuals, is to invest our time and energy into trying something new and finding new, sustainable ways of doing things. Change is never easy, but with simple, sustained changes by all of us, we Avoid single use plastic: if possible buy products in glass or paper. Glass products are easily reused and paper is a much friendlier product to the environment. Beach clean ups are personally rewarding and also a great way to make an instant difference to an area. Want to spruce up your garden? Think of plants that will not only be enjoyed by you, but will be loved by our local birds and pollinator insects. Ask at your local garden centre what plants will be best for your garden and the wildlife you wish to entice. Green energy is the way forward and that is from electric cars to heat pumps, solar power and wind turbines. Being an aware citizen as to where your energy comes from and where you could possibily change to something more sustainable, is the responsible way to future proof how we acquire our energy and telling government we want more sustainable energy practices. All natural ecosystems are under pressure. The constant loss of wildlife land to buildings and roads has led to a shortage of homes and feeding grounds for insects and animals. You can help in many fun ways by providing little animal homes such as bird boxes, bug hotels and hedgehog feeding stations, to name but a few. Find ways to make your garden a creature haven and bring life to your outside space. This is a yummy one! There are some wonderful vegatarian recipes that taste delicious, but take a bit of getting our heads around. If you are used to always having a meat with dinner, changing this to a veggie option can initially seem like you are missing something. But with so many veggie recipes available you will find a few to love! As a cheaper, and greener meal option, it is worth making the change at least once a week. On Friday, 22 April 2022 we will celebrate Earth Day. This years theme is ‘Invest In Our Planet’. On a greater scale this means that governments and businesses need to spend money and time on finding greener energy and ways for their countries to operate. will make a difference. Each new habit we start will have a ripple effect, and we can keep our planet, and all those creatures we share it with, happy and healthy.

Raring2go! Raring2go! 20 raring2go.co.uk 21 https://www.facebook.com/groups/raring2grow Raring2grow! HOME GARDENING IDEAS FOR FAMILIES ‘Gardening is the purest of human pleasures’ Francis Bacon www.raring2go.co.uk For more great tips click here to visit our Raring2grow! Facebook page Raring2Growing your own The last couple of years have seen many of us have a go at ‘growing your own’. There have been some really good results too, not only in terms of the delicious end product but also for the mental health benefits gardening gives us all. So if you haven’t tried it yet, here are a few idea to help you set up your very own ‘Raring2grow garden’… Where to plant out? Where you choose to ‘plant out’ is up to you, it can be as small as a pot, window box, grow bag or a plot in the garden, size doesn’t matter as long as it's a sunny spot. When is the best time to start planting? March, April and May are the best months in which to sew your seeds. Always read the back of the seed packet for planting information as it can differ. What are the easiest plants to grow? Hardy vegetables are a good choice. Tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, spring onions, runner beans, broad beans, peas & salad greens. Also, strawberries, courgettes and beetroot are all popular, there’s so much choice. What other plants to consider? For Spring, snowdrops, tulips, crocus, hyacinths and daffodils are just a few beautiful plants that will offer colour and variation to your garden with very little effort. How to involve the kids? Getting children involved in growing their own vegetables gives them a real sense of responsibility and helps them appreciate the value of eating home grown produce and eating healthy, so involve them from the off, planting seeds in their left over yoghurt pots is a great message about recycling. I’m sure we all have happy memories about seeing the cress seeds growing in junior school! Here's wishing you every success with your Spring planting! Raring2go! Raring2go! 22 raring2go.co.uk 23 How to help your child deal with Anxiety Anxiety is something that is felt by everyone. Firstly, anxiety is an internally pushed emotion, warning us of a perceived threat. This may assist you when looking at how to help your child when they feel anxious. Feeling apprehensive is part of being human. Sometimes children can be seen as angry rather than anxious and this creates misunderstanding, which could escalate their behaviour. To help children develop a healthy relationship with their anxiety, we have to first develop our own healthy relationship with it. There is a myth that anxiety is a ‘bad’ feeling, when in fact it is a vital emotion. If we begin to look at it as an alarm clock that lets us know when something feels unsafe, then we can comprehend its importance. Notice there is a big difference between feeling anxious and being anxious. When we feel anxious, our brain will automatically feel it needs to protect itself and can not tell the difference between a situation that is dangerous or something that just makes us feel uncomfortable. Anxiety increases energy levels preparing the body for fight or flight. Recognising signs of anxiety, before nervousness and other symptoms of anxiety get out of hand, can help you reduce the intensity of the anxiety build up. When we talk to our children about anxiety, it is important not to assume that they are thinking the same thing as you. It can be really uncomfortable as a parent to hear our children say they feel worried, but saying things like ‘Oh don’t worry about that’ or ‘That is silly’ may give them the message that what they are feeling is wrong or they shouldn’t talk about it because no one understands. Anxiety can be infectious so check in with how you are feeling. What to say when you think your child is anxious: “ I can see how anxious you are”. When children are anxious, sometimes there is no need to fix it and make it better. Just listening will help. “‘I totally understand why you are anxious” “It is okay if you don’t know what you anxious about” Sometimes children may not be able to tell you what they are feeling. Developmentally under 5’s cannot naturally regulate their emotions and they need the adults around them to help. Therefore checking in with your own emotions is crucial. Develop an Emotional Treasure Box/ Toolkit. Create a physical box of things that can be associated with calming your child. Emotional Treasure box ideas: Bubbles - blowing bubbles will help regulate their breathing Balloons – another breathing technique Colouring books Music: dance, listen or both A blanket / toy that your child chooses that calms them Fidget toys Beaded bracelets Remember anxiety is a really useful emotion, and if our children understand what it is and how it shows up, giving them the tools to manage it, will be a life-long lesson which will help them learn how to regulate it and see it as a friend. PHYSICAL THOUGHTS BEHAVIOUR Tummy ache Chest pains Difficulty breathing Feeling dizzy, light-headed Headache Needing the toilet Muscle ache Feeling Sick Blurry vision Not able to concentrate or think Can’t get to sleep Feeling on edge A lot of ‘I can’t do’ thoughts or ‘this is unfair’ Low self esteem Hitting out or shouting Fidgety Withdrawn Controlling Impulsive Short tempered Crying Frantic Anxiety symptoms can fit into one of the 3 categories listed below. Take time to answer how anxiety may be affecting you or your child in the following ways: Kari is a Specialist Parenting Coach with over 15 years professional experience as a Parenting Expert. Raring2go! Raring2go! 24 raring2go.co.uk 25 According to the book by Marie Kondo, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying, a room does not get messy by itself. You, the person who lives in it, makes the mess, so the saying goes, ‘a messy room equals a messy mind’. She also says that tidying is just a tool, not the final destination. Rather the true goal would be to visualise the lifestyle you want most, after your house has been put in order. So if you get into the right headspace to tackle the clutter and reorganise, it could be the perfect reset button to new habits and your desired home. Use the Four-Box Method Get four boxes and label them: trash, give away, keep, or re-locate. Enter any room in your home and place each item into one of the following boxes. Don’t skip a single item. This will help you see how many items you really own and you’ll know exactly what to do with each item. Fold, don’t Hang Marie Kondo states that more can be fitted into a draw than hanging in the cupboard. So neatly fold up the t-shirts and give your other clothes more breathing room. Let the kids get folding, as the sooner they start the better! Try it on How many years have you had that top or trousers that looks lovely when you hold it up, but which you haven’t worn or tried on for years? Don’t assume that it will still look great on. Try it and you may decide that really its not your style anymore and needs a new owner. MON TUES WED THUR FRI SAT SUN Make your bed Have breakfast Brush your teeth Get dressed 20 minutes of reading 20 minutes of colouring or writing Daily chore Play outside for 30 minutes Make something creative with Lego/craft No electronic devices until you do the following... Host a Clothing Swop party Have a party with friends and family and swop clothes that you no longer wear. These are not clothes that are worn out, but clothes that you don’t feel comfortable in any longer and maybe perfect for someone else. Everyone brings an agreed amount of clothing and accessories to the event. All of the items are fair game, so you can trade, barter, and donate clothes to your friends while sprucing up your own wardrobe. Spring Clear-out
