Raring2go! BACK TO SCHOOL 6 raring2go.co.uk British Science Week 5th - 14th March Away With Words By Sophie Cameron Reviewed by Willow Brown, Aged 10 - West Midlands Raring2Read! BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FAMILIES Does your family enjoy reading? Then join our Facebook group, to share ideas, tips and recommendations. www.facebook.com/groups/raring2read This book was great. It showed me what it would be like to go to school in a country when I cannot speak the language and how difficult it must be for non-English speakers. I couldn’t put this book down! It tells the story of two girls - one who is a non-English speaker from Catalan who moves to Scotland and the other - a girl who has selective mutism. My favourite thing about this book is the way it is written - it is structured really well, representing what it feels like to not understand the language with squiggly lines ~~~~~ as if it is just all mumbled jumbled up words coming out because she is not English. I sympathised with the character and it made me think about children in my school. Raring2go! would like to thank LoveReading4Kids, for this wonderful review. LoveReading4Kids, the UK’s leading children’s book recommendation website, is now a bookstore with social purpose, where 25% of the cover price can be donated to a school to buy books. Because books change lives. Buy a Book. Support a School. Make a Difference. 9 Raring2go! BACK TO SCHOOL Handy hints to help your child's reading Did you know that there are lots of opportunities around your home to improve your child’s reading? Many of us read story books with our children every night which is great but you can also mix it up a bit to help them experience other types of texts. Below are some examples of what you could be looking at together and some questions you could discuss. Instructions e.g. recipes, game rules Why do instructions have numbers? Do you think it matters which order the instructions are in? What types of punctuation are used? Why are there a lot of verbs (doing words) used in instructions? Newspaper articles Why has a headline been used? Can you find a quote from someone in the article? Why have they used photos/diagrams in the article? Can you find 5 facts? Information leaflets How has the information been organised? What types of words have been used to try and persuade you to buy a product or try something new? Biographies/autobiographies How have they been written? (3rd person, past tense, time order)? What type of stories have been included? Why have photos been included? Letters Where are the addresses? Why have capital letters been used within the addresses? How did the letter begin? How did it end? How was it organised? Remember any reading you can do with your child will help to extend their vocabulary and will help them to improve. Happy reading!

Raring2go! DAYS OUT 19 Helping children who are nervous on fireworks night Every child is unique, some like fireworks more than others and some don’t want to watch them at all which is fine. If your child is nervous around loud noises or is autistic or has sensory issues, these are our suggested tips which may help. Explain what’s going to happen. Social or visual stories can be a great help. Let them know when they’re going, where they’re going and the different steps once you’re there. If you can include images, it will help. You can find videos of firework displays on YouTube if they have never watched a display before. Google ‘fireworks social stories’ for some ideas. Have plenty of distractions. Hungry children can become distressed children very quickly. Having snacks and drinks on hand can help, maybe even a hot chocolate on a cold night can keep children from worrying and keep their tummies happy too. Use ear defenders or ear plugs. Ear defenders obviously help with the noise, you might also find that they help other people realise your child may have extra needs and give them a bit of space! If your child isn’t a fan of ear defenders (especially as they get towards the teen years) Loop ear plugs are discreet and effective. Contact the venue If your child has a disability or condition, the venue may have a specific viewing area which might give them some extra space and help deal with the crowds. Comfy shoes! Footwear isn’t just essential for keeping little feet warm, some children find the vibrations from the fireworks as off putting as the sound. Having shoes with squishy soles doesn’t elimate the issue but it can reduce it. Consider something low key at home If the noise of fireworks is a big no, maybe toasting marshmallows over a fire basket would be better, or a few sparklers, or one of our favourites is a Mystical Flame sachet that makes the flames burn different colours. Wharever you do, stay safe and have fun. THE FIREWORK CODE ALWAYS FOLLOW THE FIREWORK CODE ✷ Do not buy fireworks from UNLICENCED retailers. These fireworks may be unsafe and illegal. ✷ Only buy fireworks that comply with current safety standards.* ✷ Always keep fireworks in a closed box. 21 Raring2go! HEALTH AND WELLBEING Keeping the family healthy this Autumn As the colder months approach there often seems to be more bugs around and it can feel harder to keep active. We've asked some local experts for their top tips to improve your family's health and wellbeing at this time of year... "Every day, 7 drinks and 7 wees gives your bladder lots of ease!" Cheryl, Pee Paediatric Services "Try and keep as active as possible as we head into the colder months. It's recommended that children aged 5-18 do at least 60 minutes of moderate-vigorous activity across the week and 2-3 sessions of muscle strengthening exercise e.g. gymnastics/football/martial arts. It can be harder to get out and about when it's cold and wet but as Joe Wicks's says "You never regret a workout!" "Preschoolers need to be active for at least 3 hours a day so trips to the park, reducing time in prams, soft play, swimming and all the super activities and playgroups listed in Raring2go are great opportunities to get them moving and help them develop strength, coordination and balance." Sophie, Manchester Children's Physiotherapy "Find some fabulous outdoor activities to do no matter the weather. You can do autumn scavenger hunts to include conkers and all the different coloured leaves, you can explore new places and notice the differences in the trees as they change, bike rides in the crisp autumn mornings crunching through the leaves or even go puddle jumping. As they say, there’s no bad weather, just bad clothing! So wrap up, grab the wellies and have a great time exploring." Becca, These Mums Do Fitness

Raring2go! CLUBS AND CLASSES 23 Tennis Tykes Anyone for tennis? It’s been a great summer of tennis with plenty of action on local courts and Tennis Tykes (the fantastic pre school and school age tennis programme for children aged from 2 to 8) continues to offer its all year round programme to nurture confident, sporty children and hopefully a few tennis stars of the future too! With maximum numbers of 8-10 in a class and utilising indoor venues such as Total Fitness clubs, it means that there is plenty of one to one attention from the Tennis Tykes coach and the play can continue even in the coldest of days! Caroline Buncall, (founder of Tennis Tykes) says, “There is a fun, play based but educational approach to the classes, with each session teaching and developing, agility, balance and co-ordination through the sport of tennis. We start off with a fun warm up, followed by lots of co-ordination activities. We also ensure that every child from the age of 2 uses rackets and hits over a net during each lesson. This makes our teaching programme unique ensuring that even the youngest child experiences the thrill of hitting a ball over a low net.” For further information on the Tennis Tykes term time programme and to book your FREE TASTER CLASS, please contact Caroline Buncall on 0784 3342662/email caroline.buncall@tennistykes.co.uk or visit www.tennistykes.co.uk.
