Raring2go! Raring2Read! 1327 Helping children who are nervous on fireworks night Every child is unique, some like fireworks more than others and some don’t want to watch them at all which is fine. If your child is nervous around loud noises or is autistic, these are our suggested tips which may help. Explain what’s going to happen. Social or visual stories can be a great help. Let them know when they’re going, where they’re going and the different steps once you’re there. If you can include images, it will help. You can find videos of firework displays on YouTube if they have never watched a display before. Not sure where to start? Google ‘fireworks social stories’ for some ideas or Monkey World have an excellent example of a social story on their website. It’s not fireworks related but it is a great example! Go to www.monkeyworld.org, click on ‘Visit Us’ followed by ‘Disabled Facilities’ and then ‘Accessibility Guide’ to find it. Have plenty of distractions. Hungry children can become distressed children very quickly. Having snacks and drinks on hand can help, maybe even a hot chocolate on a cold night can keep children from worrying and keep their tummies happy too. Use ear defenders or ear plugs. Ear defenders obviously help with the noise, I also find that they help other people realise your child may have extra needs and give them a bit of space! If your child isn’t a fan of ear defenders (especially as they get towards the teen years) we find Loop ear plugs discreet and effective. Contact the venue If your child has a disability or condition, the venue may have a specific viewing area which might give them some extra space and help deal with the crowds. Comfy shoes! Footwear isn’t just essential for keeping little feet warm, my daughter finds the vibrations from the fireworks as off putting as the sound. Having shoes with squishy soles doesn’t elimate the issue but it can reduce it. Consider something low key at home If the noise of fireworks is a big no, maybe toasting marshmallows over a fire basket would be better, or a few sparklers, or one of our favourites is a Mystical Flame sachet that makes the flames burn different colours. (link to Mystical Flames on the QR code). THE FIREWORK CODE ALWAYS FOLLOW THE FIREWORK CODE ✷ Do not buy fireworks from UNLICENCED retailers. Raring2go! Clubs & Classes 21 Little Kickers have four different football classes each tailored to a different age group. However, they have two core beliefs that we take into every session. Firstly, they believe in something we call “Play not Push”. It means teaching football in a fun, pressurefree environment. They want to give children a positive introduction to sport as a whole, not just football, so they’re more likely to stay healthy and active throughout their lives. Secondly, they believe football can be educational. Coached in the right way it can stimulate imagination and aid early development skills such as learning colours and numbers, following instructions and playing as a team. It’s an approach that has bagged them numerous awards and helped them expand globally over the last 16 years. And like all their Kickers, they never stop learning. 1 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! As adults we know the value of building a savings pot, though it’s not always so easy to achieve. Savings can help cover the cost of a family holiday or Christmas – or just an unexpected bill – and our research shows 54% of us already have a regular savings habit that works for us. So how do we instil that behaviour into the younger members of our family? UK Savings Week, which is 18-24 September, is on a mission to make savings simple, easy and rewarding, for adults and children. We are encouraging adults to start, and stick to, a regular savings habit, and the same approach can be used to encourage children to see the value of building a pot of savings. A number of UK Savings Week partners are running activities for children to help them understanding the difference between what they need and what they just want, and the benefits of saving more generally. #takethesavingschallenge The UK Savings Week challenge invites the nation to review what and how they save by taking three simple steps. The same steps are as applicable to youngsters as they are adults: 1. Set a goal Identify what would they love to save up for and how much it costs. Then look at the money they are likely to get each week or month and how much they could put away towards their goal. They could write it down or draw a picture, so they remember what they’ve committed to. 2. Make it a habit Once they’ve determined how much they can save, make saving a habit for them. For example, each time they get their pocket money let them put the agreed amount into their savings account, don’t do it for them. Encourage them to check on how their savings pot is growing. Has any interest been added to their savings? How close are they to reaching their goal? 3. Reward yourself As we have said, saving can be boring, especially if you’re young and have little concept of time! Rewards along the way can be a great way of keeping them motivated and helping them to maintain their savings habit. Rewards don’t need to cost any money, and don’t need to be complicated or big gestures – it could be extra gaming time when they reach 25% of their savings goal; or a friend to sleepover when they’re at 50%. You’ll know what motivates your child and can set the appropriate rewards. Hopefully, by getting your young ones to #takethesavingschallenge you’ll start to change their behaviour. Helping them to see the value of having some money set aside and to foster a regular savings habit whilst they’re young, are life skills that will support them throughout their lives. Getting involved Almost 100 building societies, credit unions, banks and charities are supporting UK Savings Week. Many of them are holding events in their branches and with local community groups to encourage people – big and small – to get involved in a great savings habit. Look out for activities on your high street. Find out more about UK Savings Week and the savings challenge. UK Savings Week encouraging a savings habit We all know that saving money is a great idea. But let’s be honest, the suggestion of stashing away your pocket money or birthday money isn’t that exciting when you’re young. UK savings Week 22 22 22 .co.uk

The European Day of Languages is an annual celebration held on September 26th to promote linguistic diversity and cultural understanding across Europe. In 2023, this vibrant event promises to be a grand celebration of languages, bringing together people from various backgrounds to honour the rich tapestry of European linguistic heritage. On this special day, language enthusiasts, educators, and language learners will organize a wide range of activities and events throughout Europe. Language fairs, workshops, competitions, and language exchange programmes will be organised to encourage the learning and appreciation of different languages. Cultural performances, storytelling sessions, and language-themed exhibitions will showcase the diversity and beauty of European languages. In classrooms, students will engage in interactive language lessons, exploring not only the major European languages like English, French, European Day of Languages German, Spanish, and Italian but also lesserknown regional and minority languages. Language learning apps, online platforms, and digital resources will be extensively utilised to make language learning accessible to all. European institutions, governments, and educational institutions will actively participate in promoting multilingualism and fostering language learning initiatives. Public campaigns will be launched to emphasise the importance of language skills for personal growth, intercultural communication, and professional opportunities. The European Day of Languages 2023 will serve as a platform to celebrate Europe's linguistic diversity, encourage language learning, and promote cross-cultural understanding among individuals of different nationalities. By embracing the beauty of languages, Europe aims to strengthen its unity and celebrate the unique linguistic tapestry that contributes to its cultural richness. Would you like your child to learn another language, a tutor maybe closer than you think? Raring2go! European Day of Languages 28 raring2go.co.uk

EUROPEAN CENTRE FOR MODERN LANGUAGES CENTRE EUROPEEN POUR LES LANGUES VIVANTES WWW.COE.INT/EDL f #COEEDL SARDINIAN, spoken on the island of Sardinia, is the oldest Romance language still in use, and it is believed to be the closest living language to Latin. Have you ever heard of KARELIAN? It is a Finnic language spoken in Northwestern Russia and parts of Finland. Karelian is just one example of Europe’s unique linguistic heritage. THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IS ...? Well, most people assume it to be English but, in fact, the US does not have an ‘official language’ ! The CAUDATE is a brain region in the middle of the brain. It helps bilinguals switch between languages but it also keeps both languages separate. Experienced bilinguals use the caudate so much that it changes its size. THE MOST LINGUISTICALLY DIVERSE COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD Papua New Guinea (840) Indonesia (711) Nigeria (517) India (456) U.S.A. (328 languages) One rule that ENGLISH SPEAKERS follow without noticing is that adjectives have a distinct order: opinion, size, age, shape, colour, origin, material, purpose. For example, “my Greek fat big wedding” sounds a bit odd, but “my big fat Greek wedding” does sound correct. In ITALIAN the word “latte”, which English speakers use when referring to coffee with milk, actually means “milk”. Remember this when you want to order a coffee on your next trip to Italy! XD Different languages have their own equivalents of “hahaha” to represent laughter in text. You might have seen the Spanish “jajaja”, but you probably don’t know the the Thai “555” (“5” is pronounced “ha” in Thai), the Japanese “www” (“w” comes from “wara (笑)” - “to laugh”) or the Portuguese “kkkkk”. CREOLE LANGUAGES are new languages that develop when people from different countries talk and create new words to better understand each other. An example is Haitian Creole, a combination of French, West African languages, and native Taino languages. Did you know that IRISH, SCOTTISH GAELIC AND MANX have no single words for “yes” and “no”? To answer a question you use verb forms. So the answer to “Did they go home?” would be “(they) did go” or “(they) didn’t go”. “OLD” GERMAN Around the year 1700, Germans emigrated to the U.S.A. and lived in enclosed religious communities. That is why you can still come across an 18th century German in Pennsylvania. Ꙕ Д Ѡ The CYRILLIC ALPHABET was initiated by the brothers Cyril and Methodius from Thessaloniki who worked as missionaries among Slavic peoples in Central and Eastern Europe. ALBANIAN, GREEK, TURKISH AND BULGARIAN can get pretty confusing! Did you know that shaking your head can mean ‘yes’ whilst nodding can mean ‘no’? CLICK SOUNDS Only few languages use click sounds, mostly in Southern Africa. They distinguish between 5 click sounds depending on where they are produced in the mouth. ICELANDIC avoids using foreign words and prefers to form new words from ancient Viking words. So the word for computer “tölva”is formed from the old words“tala” (number) and “völva” (prophetess). SHELTA or GAMMON is a language spoken by Irish travellers or Rilantu Mincéirí. It is an instance of a “cryptic” language that was developed to communicate with each other and also to protect their privacy in regards to majority communities. TO GENDER OR NOT TO GENDER Some languages are based on genderless grammar systems, such as Turkish and English. Others have two or three genders, like German and Greek. Languages with four or more genders are quite rare: E.g. Zande (Congo) has genders for masculine, feminine, animate (e.g. animals), and inanimate. In GREENLANDIC a single word can have a fairly complex meaning: e.g. “nalaasaarusuummerujussuaraluarpunga”, can be translated as “suddenly, I really wanted to just lie down and rest, but…”. 5% Only 5% of PORTUGUESE speakers live in Portugal. Unsurprisingly, with populous countries such as Brazil and Mozambique having it as their official language. Many FINNISH WORDS have a very literal translation. Refrigerator becomes “ice cupboard” (jääkaappi), computer translates to “knowledge machine”(tietokone) and the word for treadmill (juoksumatto) simply means “running carpet”.

Raring2go! Reading 30 raring2go.co.uk Raring2go! READING 2 Many parents become aware of their child’s dyslexia only when they start school, so we thought we’d offer some ideas to support young readers who are less confident. Learning to read is hard work and can be quite daunting, often also tinged with the fear that once you can read, the bedtime stories will stop. Here are some simple ways to ensure that reading stays fun and feels achievable. Dyslexia makes it even harder, so do ask for support, and look up information on The British Dyslexia Association website. Don’t feel that offering your child extra help is cheating or stalling their learning in any way. Allow your child to choose a book they want to read and let them start reading – genuinely allowing a child to choose (even if it is not what you would have chosen for them) is a significant factor in their investment in learning. Read together, and read at your child’s pace, not your own. When they make a mistake give your child time to have another try, but then say the word yourself and allow them to carry on - this keeps the flow going. Supporting Dyslexic or less confident readers Take breaks and only read in short, achievable blocks. Also take time to look at and discuss the pictures in the book – visual literacy is important too. Remember, learning to read is not a race against other classmates, so ignore the boasting parents in the playground! Try to think of your role at home as to ensure that they keep enjoying books and stories. For an older child, make use of audio books too; if there is a class book and your child struggles to read it, download the audio version. They will keep up with the class, be able to join in discussions about the plot and characters, and knowing the story of the book will remove the anxiety associated with the challenges of reading. Look out for Super Readable books, such as those by Barrington Stoke. These are printed a little differently, with good quality paper, proper spacing and paragraph breaks too. And they only work with the very best writers working today, so you will also get a great story. All the photos on these pages are of super-readable Barrington Stoke books for readers of all ages. There are more tips on supporting dyslexic readers on our website, so check out our blog on this! By Tamsin Rosewell, Kenilworth Books
